Our Church

History:

The church we now know as Cottageville Community Methodist Church began in a brush arbor in the Sand Hill section, now known as Sheridan Township. Dr. Hugo Sheridan provided this, as well as a log cabin later, as a meeting place for the community whenever a circuit rider passed through. All that remains now is the Sheridan Cemetery nearby. The present church site was a gift from Anna Adams Willis, widow of Abraham Willis. The deed is dated August 22, 1872.

The first church building was erected in 1872. It was a rectangular shaped building with two front doors. Inside was a dividing line down the middle rows of seats to separate the men from the women. The church was known as Round O Chapel on the Round O Circuit. This was used until 1904 when the second church was built. The second church was also a large rectangular building with only one arched entrance door. A traditional style steeple held the church bell. The present church was dedicated in the spring of 1949. Since then other additions have been built.

Presently:

The present church continues to be a Christ-centered body of believers. It offers an environment of love, support and understanding to the community. It is our sincere hope that you will find here a warm and loving fellowship of people seeking to know Christ and to make known God’s presence through Him. All are welcome to share in the worship of God.
